The Link Between Vitiligo and Auto Immune Disorders

If you suffer with Vitiligo, a condition that strips your skin of its natural pigment or coloring, the odds are good that you are also battling some sort of autoimmune disorder. It took years for doctors to connect the two disorders, but recent research shows that at least 20 percent of Vitiligo suffers also get autoimmune thyroid disease, and that's juts the beginning. Many more suffer a multitude of other disorders.

Until recently, the link between the Vitiligo and autoimmune problems were not clear. Doctors seemed to see a link, but nothing substantial could be proven. Until now. In march 2013, The National Institute's of Health's National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) announced an amazing discovery: a connection between a specific gene named NALP1, Vitiligo and a host of autoimmune diseases including thyroid disease, pernicious anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and Addison's Disease.

According to lead researcher, Richard Spritz M.D., the discovery of this gene may make newer, more effective Vitiligo treatments possible within the next few years. But that's not all. It will also be able to help treat certain auto immune disorders. By finding ways to block the inflammatory response of the NALP1 gene, doctors may some day be able to cure certain autoimmune disorders.

Affecting nearly 25 million Americans, autoimmune disease can be life threatening, says NIAMS Director Stephen I. Kratz, M.D., PhD. "The more we can understand these diseases, including the genes that predispose us to them, the closer we come to better treatments and preventative measures."

The same is true for Vitiligo. Maybe not life threatening, the skin disorder does play havoc with its victim's quality of life. As more and more Melanocytes are destroyed within the skin, the epidermis is stripped of its coloring leaving unsightly markings on the skin. Finding a more effective treatment plan may be possible now that researchers understand the link between the gene that causes the disorder and autoimmune diseases associated with it.

By learning how to block inflammatory pathways and keeping the immune system from turning itself on, doctors hope to stop the spread of Vitiligo before it becomes noticeable, and keep other over-reactive immune responses at bay.

Although still in its early stages of research, the fact that a single gene link has been found shows promise, claim both doctors Katz and Spritz. In time this important discovery of the NALP1 gene may hold the key to a cure for both medical maladies.

A long-term solution for vitiligo should address the internal causes of vitiligo by tackling all vitiligo contributing factors. Only by controlling the nutritional, hormonal, psychological and environmental triggers of vitiligo, using a multidimensional and holistic approach to healing you can reverse the "internal vitiligo environment"- the only, safe, natural and effective way you could ever achieve lasting vitiligo freedom.

Vitiligo: It's Symptoms, Treatments and Complications

It may begin with a loss of coloring inside of the mouth or in the genital area; a change of color in the eyeball; or even a whitening of your eyelashes, eyebrows or beard. Then you begin to notice white patches of skin appearing on your arms, legs or other parts of the body. Before you know it your skin begins to take on a splotchy bleached look. You are losing your coloring and you don't know why.

Vitiligo (the loss of skin pigment) is a condition which results when the cells of the skin stop producing pigment, or coloring. This leaves the skin with unsightly white patches that seem to grow bigger by the day. For darker skinned people this loss of coloring can leave them feeling disfigured.

According to the Mayo Clinic, as many as 60 million people worldwide may suffer with the effects of Vitiligo. It may affect one small part of the body, or cover the entire skin. Its symptoms, say doctors, are most visible in the armpits, navel, genitals and rectum during the earliest stages of the disease, eventually spreading to other parts of the body and skin.

Traditionally, people with Vitiligo have experienced white patches on their skin that seem to grow. Others report a whitening of body hair as early as age 20 and a loss of coloring inside of the mouth and eyeball.

While not life threatening, the loss of coloring for many people can be alarming. Unfortunately, many of the traditional treatments used to help 'cure' Vitiligo often cause more severe color stripping and damage to the skin.

Topical Psoralen Plus Ultraviolet (PUVA)
Maybe the most common way to treat Vitiligo, PUVA requires covering the skin with a chemical concoction that makes it ultra-sensitive to light. Then the affected area is exposed to high levels of UVA radiation which burns the skin, turning the white patches pink. As the skin heals, darker pigment from the scarring appears.

Complications
The complications of this therapy can be serious. Many patients have reported a thinning of the skin after PUVA therapy as well as sunburn-like damage. Skin cancer is another risk, considering the high doses of UVA radiation the skin undergoes during treatment.

Monobenzone
Used to help restore pigment to the skin, this potent drug comes with some severe side effects including:
- sunburn
- blistering
- a sensitivity to the sun
- skin cancer

Methoxsalen
Available both orally and topically Methoxsalen needs to be taken exactly as prescribed since complications form the medication could be dangerous. They include: - aging/wrinkling
- cataracts
- skin cancer

Corticosteroids
Commonly used in the early stages of Vitiligo, corticosteroids are used topically for several months to help restore skin pigmentation. Although some people have found the medication helpful, the side effects are not worth the minimal relief found.

Complications:
In addition to sensitivity to light and a recurrence of the Vitiligo once the medication is stopped, corticosteroids may result in the following:

- Thinning of the skin: as the layers of the skin thin from the treatment, infection becomes more common which can lead to some serious (or even life threatening) medical issues.
- Stretch marks
- Skin striping

Dovonex
A derivative of vitamin D, Dovonex can cause a serious allergic reaction as well as severe burning of the skin, itching, rashes, a worsening of Vitiligo whitening and peeling of the affected skin.

Although several medical treatments are available to the Vitiligo sufferer, the fact that what is considered the best treatment options often come with serious side effects that can harm your skin and your health. Most doctors advise their patients to consider the risks carefully before taking any medication or undergoing nay skin changing procedure.

If you are really looking for a solution to your vitiligo, the cure should address the internal causes of vitiligo by tackling all the factors that contribute to vitiligo. A natural cure is a good approach but only by controlling the nutritional, hormonal, psychological and environmental triggers of vitiligo using a multidimensional and holistic approach to healing one can make amends to the reasons why one has vitiligo. If your treatment option encompasses all this only then can you a permanent solution to vitiligo.

Tips for Healing Vitiligo Holistically

The medical industry is keen on using high tech procedures and pharmaceutical drugs to cure disease, but in some cases a more holistic approach can save the patient thousands of dollars and endless suffering by eliminating dangerous side effects.

Holistic healing is nothing new. It has been practiced worldwide for centuries. Yet too many of today's medical practitioners scoff at the idea that a simpler way of treating diseases may actually work. Those who suffer with Vitiligo have learned that holistic healing is not only more effective, but safer than more traditional treatment options.

A Nutritional Approach to Healing

Vitiligo has been directly linked to a toxic buildup in the body. This is often caused by overworking the liver and kidneys with the wrong diet. When the liver is unable to purge toxins from the body fast enough, the skin begins to release them, and this can cause serious skin damage, including the death of pigment cells. By changing the way you eat, you can begin to stop this dangerous leakage and reverse the effects of Vitiligo.

Some of the things that should be avoided while healing Vitiligo holistically include:

. Gluten: whether they know it or not most people suffer with some sort of gluten sensitivity or intolerance, and this can cause a reaction in the skin.

. Acidic foods: eating too many acidic foods can throw off the Ph balance in the body, and that can leave the skin vulnerable to attack.

. Processed foods: jam packed with preservatives, chemicals and other toxins, processed foods are horrible for your body and your skin. Avoid them while healing.

. Sugar laden foods: soft drinks, snacks, etc. can all alter your glucose levels which can negatively affect the health of your skin.

What Should You Eat?

The foods you eat can either hurt your skin or help it heal. Adopting a Vitiligo- busting diet will include adding plenty of these to your daily eating plan:

. Proteins: considered the building blocks of cells, protein such as lean meats, eggs, and nuts can all help your skin heal.

. Fats and oils: the body needs a certain amount of fats and oils daily in order to function properly. Be sure to use extra virgin olive oil for cooking to help boost your immune system and increase circulation in the skin.

. Omega 3 Fatty acids: known to boost immunity and limit damaging inflammation throughout the body, eating plenty of deep sea fish can help your skin return to its natural coloring and glow.

. Fruits and vegetables: an essential part of nay diet, fresh fruits and veggies give your skin the right mix of nutrients.

. Water: nothing beats clear fresh water when it comes to keeping the skin healthy. Be sure to drink at least 64 ounces every day.

Sleep to the Rescue

Most people underestimate the value of a good night's sleep. Without proper rest, the body (and skin) is unable to rejuvenate and fix itself. One way to boost your skin's health is to get at least eight hours of quality sleep each night.

Exercise a Must to Vitiligo Healing

If there is any magic "pill" for good health it may be good old fashioned exercise. Research has shown that just 30 minutes of mild aerobic exercise each day helps to improve circulation, healing and boost the immune system.

Stress Reduction

When you are under stress, your body reacts in many ways: your adrenal glands pump harder; your heart races and your blood pressure rises. Your entire body awakens to a high alert. If left unchecked, this can affect any organ and system in the body. Use common stress reduction techniques like yoga, medication, exercise and even relaxation to help reduce the negative effects of stress on your body - and your skin.

Vitamins to the Rescue

When your skin is starved for the right nutrients, it will react in a negative way. To help heal Vitiligo holistically, be sure to add these important vitamins and minerals to your daily health regiment:

. omega 3 fatty acids
. vitamin C
. vitamin E
. zinc
. beta carotene
. Phytochemicals (boron, chromium, calcium, cesium, cobalt, copper, selenium)
. thiamine
. riboflavin
. vitamin K
Treating Vitiligo holistically requires than a few simple fixes. It requires a multi- pronged approach to healing that deals with all facets of the body and finding ways to heal the skin in a more natural and long lasting manner.
